Smooth, Effortless? The pen balances so nicely in your hand, you're scarcely aware of the words you're writing. They're short, angry, unforgiving words. But you press on, filling the sheet of monogrammed stationery with your rage, one letter at a time. Inexplicably, fueled by each drop of ink, the paper beneath the gold nib absorbs your vehemence. A trail of crystalline blue traces quickly and surely and floods you with memories of the last vacation you took together. Oh, the sky! And the sea! The utter blueness, of your "holiday in paradise." You remember the seaside bungalow where sultry trade winds bore your passions with spirit, and you knew then that you loved everything, and everyone. Especially him. Now, of course, you are not so sure. Your pen falters just a bit, and when you look down at what you have written, you notice large, transparent splashes dotting the page, smearing your bitterness into an indecipherable mess. You know now you'll never send the letter. You must never let him see your weakness. You stop writing, go through the elaborate ritual of refilling your pen, deliberately place it aside on the blotting paper and stare out the window into the midnight rain... ~Barbara Benepe Publisher Barbara Benepe invites you to visit Cayuse Press for more fiction, poetry and features. © 1999 by Barbara Benepe.
