To Balance or Not to Balance Balance--that wonderful state of keeping the peace--is okay, but off-balance is better. Balance is welcoming your snooty "pop-in" cousin from New York to stay over. Off-balance is short-sheeting the bed and "enhancing" the liquid soap with food coloring. Balance is timidly accepting the fact that bananas will always be slammed to the bottom of the sack and finished off by a bagger spiking a frozen turkey and two canned hams. Off-balance is grabbing up said bagger into an enthusiastic bear-hug while thanking him profusely for helping you make banana bread. Balance is reminding the kids "one last time" that it is their responsibility to take out the trash. Off-balance is nodding amicably when they say they'll "get to it later," then, tossing the garbage into their rooms. (This state of off-balance requires patience...it might be months or even years before the stench is noticed. Hang in there...when they go away to college, you can always grow mushrooms--or invite your cousin back.) ~Jacquelin McArtor Jacquelin, mother of two, enjoys writing and caring for her family.
